W. C. "Uncle Chris" Boyer
July 25, 1935--Purcell
Register-- W. C.Boyer was born in
New Marion, Ind., on February 14, 1847. He enlisted in the Civil War in 1864 and
moved to Indian Territory in 1873. On October 3, 1886, he married Annie Clardy
in Wamego,
Kansas, daughter of J. E. Clardy, prominent lawyer and early day settler of
Kansas.
To the union was born one son, Frank Boyer. He died Sunday at the age of
88...Internment was made in the Hillside Cemetery of Purcell.
For a number of years, Chris held a government license for operating a trading
store in the old Kickapoo Nation near the site of what is now Wellston,
Oklahoma. He later removed to the
Pottawatomie Country near Wanette where he engaged in farming and ranching,
having extensive land holdings in that area. He moved to Purcell before the
opening of this country and in 1895 was appointed Deputy United States Marshal
here. He served in this position for four years...and following this term, he
served as U. S. Jailer for several additional years.”
