Walter Emerson (Jake) Hocker

Elk City Journal, September 21, 1839—Elk City Journal--Funeral Services for W. E. Hocker, President of the First National Bank who died at his home early Wednesday night, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Grubitz and Son Funeral chapel.  He was 70 years old.  The Scottish Rite Consistory of Oklahoma will conduct the service at the chapel.  The Elk City Masonic lodge will conduct the graveside ceremony at Fairlawn cemetery, where burial will be.

Mayor V. C. Tisdal has issued a proclamation asking all Elk City  business house to close from 1:45 to 3 p.m. Friday to pay respects to one of Elk City’s pioneer leaders.  In the proclamation, Mayor Tisdal said in part:  “Walter E. Hocker has left indelibly written into the history of our city, community and state his works and efforts as a Federal peace officer in the old Chickasaw Nation, as a pioneer cotton ginner and processor, as a Western Oklahoma railroad builder, as a banker with high ideals for the development of our community and as a public spirited citizen.”

In 886, at the age of 17, Mr. Hocker came to Oklahoma Indian Territory.  He was born in Middlegrove, Mo., in 1869...
