H. Peckinpaugh DUSM

  SHOT THROUGH HEART

An Officer Killed and The Post Master At Wilburton, I. T. Robbed Monday Night.

November 29, 1899—Dallas Morning News—South McAlester, I. T.—At Wilburton last night about 8:30 twelve or fifteen shots rang out on the night air and when the smoke had cleared away it was found that Deputy Marshal H. Peckinpaugh was shot through the heart.  Death was instantaneous.

Postmaster Cox closed the office and started home.  Two or three men, he could not tell the exact number, halted him and demanded his money. He refused and was knocked down and robbed. His cries for help were heard by Deputy Peckinpaugh, who happened to be on the street.

When Peckinpaugh heard the cries for help, he broke and ran in the direction whence the voice came.

After Cox was knocked down and his money secured, the robbers made a break to get away and ran right into Peckinpaugh, who was coming from the opposite direction.

They were commanded to halt and answered with a shot, twelve or fifteen shots ringing out in rapid succession with the result as stated above.

It is reported that the robber secured $240.  As far as known none of the robbers were wounded and left behind no clue with which to identify them with.

Deputies Holvey and Cox were dispatched to the scene of the tragedy this morning and will leave no stone unturned to hunt down and bring the guilty parties to justice.
