AN OUTLAW CAPTURED

Red Davis, Reported to Have Killed Many Men, Is Captured

January 3, 1902—Cordell Weekly Beacon—Chandler:  Red Davis, a renowned outlaw of the Seminole and Creek nations, was recently captured on the North Canadian by Roll Davis and John Pierson the Arlington outlaw catchers.  Red Davis, a horrible looking Negro, reported to have killed lots of men and stolen many horses, is now in the Wewoka jail.  Red Davis was one of the best marksmen of the two territories, and often said that he would never be taken alive.  But he was and will be kept behind the iron bars.  Roll Davis and John Pierson caught the human tiger unawares in his jungle, and would have killed the brute if he had made any dangerous resistance.  It is said that every dog has his day, and outlaw Red Davis had many days, but his perpetual night has enfolded the human beast, never to be released.

BAD MEN FROM BITTER CREEK

January 3, 1902—Cordell Weekly Beacon—last Sunday Sheriff Miller got information that Levi Reed and Jim Simms, alias Jim Fuller, were quartered at Mrs. Vest’s place, three and a half miles south of town and he sent Deputies Bottom and Griffin with a posse out after them.  Reed and Simms saw the sheriff’s posse coming and made for the creek come distance away, but were soon overtaken, arrested and brought to town.  Each of them had a dangerous looking 45-caliber six-shooter and over 100 rounds of cartridges and reluctantly surrendered to the officers.  Reed is under indictment by the Federal grand jury at El Reno for horse stealing in the Kiowa country, before its opening to settlement, and got out of the Federal jail at Guthrie some time ago, where he was confined awaiting trial.  Simms alias Fuller, is wanted for breaking jail at Watonga.  Both were fined and given a jail sentence for “toting pistols.” By Judge Billups last Monday.  They have the reputation of being bad men from the head of Bitter Creek.

Since the above was put in type, deputies Bottom and Griffin took Reed to Cloud Chief where they turned him over to deputy United States Marshal W. D. Fossett who took him back to the federal jail at Guthrie, and the Sheriff of Blaine County has taken Simms back to Watonga, where he is wanted for stealing a pair of mules and jail breaking some time ago.
